Workshop: Making Paste Paper

papers by Celeste Brosenne

Explore the playful art of paste paper by blending color, texture, and movement. Students will experiment with layered paints, expressive marks, and organic patterns to create richly textured papers that are unique works of art. Past Papering can add depth and interest to your preexisting marbled papers. Bring your own marbled papers to experiment with.

Workshop: Introduction to Marbling

Marbling on paper is an ancient art that revolves around floating paint/pigment on a vat of thickened water and then using a stylus or combs to create a variety of patterns. It is a magical process which got its name because some of the papers actually look like marble. It has been extensively used as book end pages and covers before multiple color printing.

During this workshop you will learn how to drop the paint, use the combs and stylus, and how to lay the paper down on the vat. You will get the basic recipes for the materials needed and learn four basic patterns that are the basis of traditional patterns. Also, you will leave with your own papers you will be able to use in a variety of the paper arts. All experience levels are welcome. Please wear clothes that can get dirty.

Instructor: Olga Ricalde has been marbling for 10 years. She learned to marble at Minnesota Center for Book Arts but has also had classes from the Chena River Marblers. Since 2024 she has been teaching marbling Introduction to Marbling and Water Color Marbling at MCBA. She has also shown her work at local galleries.
